Furn el-Chebbak
Furn el-Chebbak is a compact town in Baabda District on the eastern edge of Greater Beirut. Its streets combine municipal offices, schools, university facilities, churches, shops and the working rhythm of neighbourhood bakeries.
Orientation
Furn el-Chebbak sits immediately east of Beirut, in Mount Lebanon’s Baabda District. The municipality also covers Ain El Remmaneh and Tahwitet El Nahr; its boundaries meet Beirut to the west, Sin El Fil to the north, Chiyah to the south and Hazmieh to the east.
This is a built-up urban town rather than a sightseeing quarter. Use it as a close look at everyday Greater Beirut: residential blocks, public institutions, small commerce and food counters occupy the same streets.
Damascus Road and the civic core
Damascus Road is the practical reference point. The municipal building is here, near Mar Nohra Garden and the churches and theatre around it. This is a useful place to get your bearings before walking the immediate streets.
Furn el-Chebbak has a strong institutional presence. The Lebanese University’s Faculty of Pedagogy and National Institute of Fine Arts are based in the town, alongside the University of Wisdom, public and private schools, public offices, banks and insurers. The concentration explains the daytime flow better than any landmark circuit.
Shops, food and the furn
The Furn el-Chebbak souk is the town’s commercial spine, with restaurants and local services among the retail activity. Look beyond the main road for the small, open-fronted businesses that serve residents and workers.
A neighbourhood bakery offers the clearest short encounter with the place’s food culture. In one documented ground-floor furn opposite a school playground, the baker works between a gas oven and a large stainless-steel bench. Production begins at about four in the morning; by midday, the pace can slow from a queue to conversation at a plastic table.
Manakish moves fast from dough to counter. Soft risen dough is divided, flattened and stretched, then topped—often with za’atar and olive oil, cheese, or both—and baked for a few minutes. Order it hot and take it away folded or rolled in paper.
How to visit it well
Come in the morning for bakeries and the working start of the town; late morning is better for a slower walk around the civic and commercial streets. Furn el-Chebbak rewards a short, focused stop rather than a full-day itinerary.
Useful approach: identify a specific address or business before setting out. Street life is dense, and the municipality spans several adjoining neighbourhoods.
Best etiquette: at a furn, order simply and keep the counter clear. These are working neighbourhood businesses, not staged food experiences.
