Place du Palais
Place du Palais is the open palace square at the summit of Monaco-Ville, directly before the Prince’s Palace. It is the key orientation point on the Rock, with views towards Port Hercule and Fontvieille.
The square on the Rock
Place du Palais is the broad, paved forecourt of the Prince’s Palace at the western end of Monaco-Ville. It sits about 60 metres above sea level on the Rock, where the tight old-town lanes open onto a formal public space.
Use it as Monaco-Ville’s main reference point. The palace façade fills the uphill side; the outer edge looks over the principality, with Port Hercule and Monte-Carlo to one side and Fontvieille to the other. Historic cannons and cannonballs along the square recall the site’s defensive role.
Palace frontage and fortress history
The square faces a working sovereign residence, not a stand-alone museum façade. The palace began as a Genoese frontier fortress, with construction starting in 1215, and became the Grimaldi seat after the family established its rule over Monaco in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.
What is visible from the square is the result of that long conversion from fortress to palace. The State Apartments lie beyond the façade and are separately ticketed when their seasonal visitor route operates. Their historic rooms include the Cour d’Honneur, the Gallery of Hercules and the Throne Room.
Changing of the guard
At 11:55 daily, the Prince’s Carabiniers change the guard in the square. It is a formal military ceremony at the palace entrance and is free to watch.
For a clear view, arrive around 15 minutes early, especially in the busiest months. Keep the marked space in front of the palace clear and follow directions from the guards; this is an active official residence as well as a visitor landmark.
Arriving and moving on
The square is reached on foot through Monaco-Ville or by climbing the brick-paved Rampe Major from Place d’Armes. The ramp takes roughly 10 minutes uphill and gives increasingly wide harbour views. For a less steep approach, Monaco bus routes 1 and 2 stop at Place de la Visitation; it is then about a five-minute walk through the old-town lanes.
Vehicle access on the Rock is restricted. Parking des Pêcheurs is the practical car park for Monaco-Ville. The square itself is level and marked as accessible; the palace’s State Apartments, however, involve stairs.
Best use of the stop
Come in the morning for the guard change or at a quieter hour to read the square as an overlook. From here, follow the old-town streets east towards Monaco Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum, or take Rampe Major down towards La Condamine and Port Hercule. The square is most useful as a junction: palace ahead, old town behind, and the lower city below.
