Get oriented

Gozo is small enough to use Victoria as a practical base. The island’s main town sits inland, with the fortified Citadel above it and roads radiating towards the villages, bays and headlands. Expect slopes rather than long flat promenades: settlements occupy hilltops and ridges, while valleys run down to the sea.

The built landscape is as much part of the visit as the coast. Look for local limestone houses, church domes and village squares. In Victoria, narrow streets below the Citadel lead between St George’s Basilica, Independence Square and Republic Street.

Start with stone and history

At Xagħra, the Ġgantija Archaeological Park is Gozo’s essential ancient site. Its two Late Neolithic temple structures stand within a shared outer megalithic wall; the complex was built using local Coralline and Globigerina limestone. Allow about an hour for the interpretation centre and outdoor route to the temples.

The park has a bus stop close by, parking, and step-free access through the visitor facilities. Pair it with Victoria’s Citadel, where bastions look over the island and museums occupy former historic buildings.

Choose a coast

Gozo’s shoreline changes quickly between open cliff country, narrow inlets and sheltered swimming spots.

• Dwejra: explore the Inland Sea and its tunnel to the open sea; it is a major diving area.
• Mġarr ix-Xini: a rocky inlet reached through a ravine, with a 1661 watchtower above the entrance. Its sheltered, relatively shallow water is used for swimming and diving.
• Ta’ Ċenċ: follow the clifftop landscape near Sannat for exposed coastal views; the sea below is a recognised dive area.
• Ramla Bay: Gozo’s broad sandy beach lies below Xagħra and Nadur, a useful contrast to the island’s many rocky entries to the water.

Cliff paths and rocky coves are uneven. Wear proper footwear and do not treat an unguarded edge as a viewpoint.

Arrivals and moving around

The vehicle-and-passenger ferry connects Ċirkewwa on Malta with Mġarr Harbour on Gozo. From Valletta, passenger-only fast ferries also arrive at Mġarr; the crossing takes about 45 minutes. Mġarr is the transport gateway, while Victoria is the island’s road and bus hub.

A car or taxi makes dispersed sites efficient, especially if combining Dwejra, Xagħra and the southern coast in one day. Buses work best when you plan around a single village or attraction rather than trying to cover the whole island at speed. Cycling suits confident riders prepared for steep, exposed roads.
