Vecrīga (Old Riga)

Vecrīga is Riga’s compact old town on the Daugava’s right bank. Its medieval street pattern, church towers, merchant buildings and riverfront form the city’s historic core.

Orientation

Vecrīga—Old Riga—is the medieval core of Latvia’s capital, enclosed by the Daugava on its west side and the canal-and-park belt to the east. It sits within Riga’s UNESCO-listed Historic Centre, but it is the older, tighter part: narrow lanes, small squares and a skyline led by church spires rather than high-rise buildings.

Riga developed here as a port from 1201 and became a Hanseatic trading centre. Fire, war and rebuilding changed many structures, so this is a layered historic district rather than an untouched medieval town.

The essential walk

Start at Town Hall Square for the House of the Blackheads, then take Skārņu iela to St. Peter’s Church. Its 72-metre tower has an observation deck with a clear read of the old street grid, the river and the newer city beyond.

Continue towards Riga Cathedral and Dome Square, then follow Mazā Pils iela to the Three Brothers, a group of historic townhouses. For the defensive side of old Riga, walk north via the Powder Tower, surviving wall fragments and the Swedish Gate before reaching Riga Castle on the river.

Useful distinction: the House of the Blackheads is a reconstruction of the wartime-destroyed merchants’ hall, while the guild halls seen today are largely 19th-century reworkings. The streets still tell the medieval story; individual buildings often contain several later chapters.

River edge and views

Walk west to 11. novembra krastmala, the broad embankment beside the Daugava. It has benches, boat berths and the best immediate river-level perspective on the old town’s towers. This is a working city waterfront with traffic, not a quiet quay.

For the classic skyline view, cross Akmens tilts to the left bank and look back. Vecrīga’s low roofs and vertical church towers stand opposite the sloping glass form of the National Library of Latvia. Sightseeing boats also run on the Daugava and the city canal in season.

Getting there and getting around

Vecrīga is best covered on foot. From Riga Central Station, the edge of the old town is about a five-minute walk; tram and bus stops ring the boulevard side. Bus 22 from the airport reaches the old-town edge.

Keep the route compact and use the lanes as connectors rather than trying to follow a straight line. Cobblestones and uneven paving are common, so sturdy footwear is useful. Cars are a poor way to explore the core; the riverfront and surrounding boulevards carry most through-traffic.

Timing

Go early for quieter squares and cleaner views of the façades. Daylight makes the tower-and-river route easiest to navigate; evenings are better for the district’s restaurants, cafés and bars. In winter, the streets are quieter but can be cold and slippery.
