Amerlinghaus
Amerlinghaus is a listed two-storey courtyard house at Stiftgasse 8 in Vienna’s Neubau district. It combines a rare Spittelberg courtyard with a self-managed cultural centre and the small Neubau District Museum.
What it is
Amerlinghaus is one of the older surviving buildings in Spittelberg, the historic quarter within Vienna’s 7th district. The long, two-storey house stands between Stiftgasse and Schrankgasse; painter Friedrich von Amerling was born here in 1803.
Its importance is as much social as architectural. Threatened with demolition in the 1970s, the house was occupied during protests in 1975, restored, and reopened on 1 April 1978 as a self-managed cultural and communications centre. It remains a working home for non-commercial groups, initiatives, courses and public events rather than a conventional museum attraction.
The courtyard
Enter from Stiftgasse 8 and look for the elongated inner court. This is the reason to make the short detour from the surrounding streets:
- exterior staircases and Pawlatschen—Viennese open gallery walkways—run along the upper level;
- the north side has a two-bay arcade carried by Tuscan columns;
- the building’s modest scale and enclosed court give a clear sense of old Spittelberg’s domestic fabric.
The courtyard is part of an active building, not a preserved period set. Respect rooms and spaces in use by resident groups.
Culture and local history
The Kulturzentrum Spittelberg im Amerlinghaus hosts a changing programme of talks, workshops, performances, exhibitions and community activity. Its spaces are primarily allocated to self-organised, non-commercial initiatives, which explains the centre’s distinct civic character.
The building also contains the Bezirksmuseum Neubau, Vienna’s smallest district museum. Its displays and temporary exhibitions focus on the history of Neubau and its former suburbs, including Spittelberg, local trades and textile production. The museum has occupied the house since 1978.
Visiting practicalities
Amerlinghaus is at Stiftgasse 8, 1070 Vienna, at the corner of Schrankgasse. It fits naturally into a walk through Spittelberg’s narrow streets.
For the district museum, the regular public hours are Wednesday 17:00–19:00 and Saturday 10:00–13:00; admission is free. The centre’s office hours are Tuesday to Friday, 14:00–18:00. Cultural events, room access and café operations follow their own schedules.
The historic structure includes stairs and exterior galleries. Do not assume step-free access throughout the building.
