Tanque La Unión

What it is

Tanque La Unión is a public lavadero—a communal washing basin—rather than a church ruin or museum. A long, water-filled tank runs beside 22 individual stone washing stations, all sheltered by a neoclassical arcade. Look for the practical details: soap niches at the basins, foot space below them, and benches under the arches.

The site was built for an everyday need in a city where many households did not have their own washing facilities. It is a compact record of how water, domestic work and social life met in Antigua.

Find the right corner

The washhouse occupies the corner of 2a Avenida Sur and 6a Calle Oriente, beside Plaza La Unión and across the street from Santa Clara. It is part of the street scene, so there is no grand approach or separate monument precinct to navigate.

From Parque Central, follow the grid southeast toward Santa Clara. Combine this stop with the adjacent plaza and the nearby convent ruins; the tank itself needs only a short pause, but its location makes it an efficient landmark on a walking route through the southern side of the historic centre.

History in brief

The place was formerly known as Plaza de San José. Construction of the larger basin was ordered in 1850, and it opened on 3 February 1853. Its later name, La Unión, recalls Central American unionist aspirations and political events of the period.

The 1976 earthquake badly damaged the structure. Restoration retained the neoclassical character seen today: repeated arches, columns and the orderly row of basins. The result is not a colonial-era washhouse—this basin is 19th-century—but it belongs to Antigua’s historic urban fabric.

How to read the site today

Water remains in the central tank, while the plaza and arcade work chiefly as a public corner for sitting, passing through and looking around. Washing can still occur, but it is not a scheduled display and should not be expected at a particular time.

For the clearest view, stand at the plaza edge and look along the arcade so the repeating basins and arches form one line. Keep off the basins, walls and architectural elements: this is a working historic structure as well as a public space.

Practical notes

• Access: The tank and adjoining plaza are open public space rather than a ticketed attraction.
• Best pairing: Santa Clara lies directly opposite; continue through the surrounding streets rather than treating the tank as a standalone destination.
• Time needed: Allow 10–20 minutes, longer if using the plaza as a rest stop.
