Kompong Luong Silver Village

Kompong Luong is a village near Oudong in Kandal Province, Cambodia, known for family-run Khmer silverworking workshops. It is a working craft community rather than a retail street.

Why Kompong Luong matters

Kompong Luong is one of Cambodia’s principal centres of traditional silverwork. Its location near the former royal capital of Oudong is part of the story: Khmer silversmithing long served ceremonial and elite use, and workshops remain concentrated here.

This is not a single attraction or showroom. The point of visiting is to see a living village craft in its working setting, where households make jewellery, decorative boxes, ritual objects and small animal forms.

What to look for

The most revealing details are often on the workbench rather than in the display case. Silversmiths shape, hammer, chase, engrave and assemble pieces by hand; delicate filigree is another established local technique. Khmer designs commonly draw on floral forms and Angkor-inspired ornament.

A workshop may be both a family home and a sales space. Look for:

  • small hammers, punches, clamps and hand tools
  • worked sheets and fine silver wire
  • raised decoration produced by hammering from the reverse
  • bowls, boxes, jewellery and ceremonial pieces in progress

Do not assume every polished object on sale nearby was made in the room where it is displayed.

Visiting the workshops

Kompong Luong lies in Ponhea Lueu District, Kandal Province, close to National Road 5 and east of Oudong. It fits naturally into a half- or full-day outing from Phnom Penh that also includes Oudong’s hilltop stupas, but the village merits time in its own right.

Arrive in the daytime, when workshop activity is easiest to observe. These are private family workplaces, not a formal museum circuit: ask before entering, handling tools or taking photographs. A local driver or guide can help identify active workshops and bridge the language gap.

Buying with precision

Buy directly only when the seller can explain the object. Ask three direct questions: Who made it? Where is the workshop? What metal is it? Then ask how it was made—filigree, hammering, chasing or engraving—and whether the named maker made the piece.

A hallmark may be useful, but it is not proof of origin or workmanship by itself. Silver content and plating vary between objects, so do not treat the colour or weight as a guarantee. For a substantial purchase, request the maker’s name, workshop location and the stated metal content in writing.

Combine it sensibly

Oudong is nearby, but it is a separate historic site. Visit Kompong Luong for the craft and Oudong for royal stupas and the landscape from the ridge. Keep temple clothing modest if your itinerary includes Oudong; in the workshops, the essential rule is simpler: respect people’s homes and working rhythm.
