The sand sea

Wahiba Sands is the older, still widely used name for the Sharqiya Sands: an extensive desert between the Eastern Hajar foothills and the Arabian Sea. The dune field runs roughly 180 km north to south and up to 80 km across.

The northern sector has the most dramatic ridges, with dunes rising to about 100 metres. Their honey-coloured faces and darker red bases are the landscape’s defining feature. This is a working desert as well as a visitor destination: Bedouin communities have long lived across the sands.

Where to base yourself

Bidiyah, Al Wasil and Al Mintirib are the practical gateways on the northern and western edge. They are where paved roads end, supplies are easiest to find and many camps arrange collection.

For most visitors, an overnight desert camp is the cleanest way to experience the place. It puts the evening and early-morning light within walking distance, rather than reducing the sands to a quick roadside stop. Camp standards range from simple huts or tents to fully serviced rooms; confirm whether dinner, breakfast and the sand transfer are included.

What to do

Keep the programme focused on the terrain.

• Walk a nearby ridge in the first or last light of the day, when contours are clear and the sand is cooler.
• Take a guided 4WD outing for access beyond the camp belt and for dune driving by someone who knows the routes.
• Use the quiet hours well. Dune silhouettes and the open night sky are part of the point of staying overnight.

The sands are not a single formal attraction with a central gate or a fixed circuit. The experience depends heavily on which camp or guide accesses which section.

Getting in and moving safely

From Muscat, the drive to the edge settlements takes roughly two to three hours. A regular car can reach Bidiyah or Al Wasil, but soft sand beyond them calls for a proper 4WD or a pre-arranged camp transfer.

Do not drive into the dunes in a two-wheel-drive car. For independent 4WD travel, use an established route, reduce tyre pressure for sand, carry water and recovery equipment, and avoid travelling alone. The terrain has unmarked tracks and some soft sections; a local driver is the sensible choice for anyone without desert-driving experience.

When to go

October to March offers the most manageable conditions for walking and camping. Summer heat is severe, so make any outdoor activity early or late in the day. Bring sun protection, closed shoes for hot sand and a warm layer for a winter night in camp.
