Střelecký ostrov

Střelecký ostrov is a narrow public park island in the Vltava beneath Legion Bridge, between Prague’s Old Town riverfront and Malá Strana. Its shaded northern end gives a low, river-level perspective on Charles Bridge, Kampa and Prague Castle.

Orientation

Střelecký ostrov sits in the Vltava at the edge of Prague’s historic centre, directly below Legion Bridge (Most Legií). Though small, the island is long enough to separate its uses: the northern half is a public riverside park; the southern end contains hospitality and sports premises.

The island’s name means roughly “Archers’ Island”. Prague marksmen trained here with bows and crossbows from the era of Charles IV, and the first large Sokol gymnastics gathering took place here in 1882.

The north end: the reason to come

Walk north from the bridge into the mature trees and grass. This is the useful pause in a riverside walk: benches, shade and water at eye level rather than another viewpoint above the city.

From the northern tip, look along the river for:

  • Charles Bridge upstream, with the towers of Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral beyond.
  • Kampa across the western channel, including the former mill buildings by Museum Kampa.
  • National Theatre and the Old Town embankment on the eastern side.
  • Letná rising above the opposite bank farther downstream.

The view is most legible from the open river edge; the tree canopy is the better place to sit in warm weather.

Bridge, building and park

Legion Bridge replaced Prague’s first chain bridge across the island in 1901. A broad ornamental staircase descends from its southern side to the island, making the bridge itself the natural entrance and exit.

Near the centre stands the former marksmen’s inn, a protected Empire-style building completed in 1812 after an earlier wooden shooting range burned down. Its later terrace, café and loggia additions explain why this otherwise modest building remains a conspicuous feature of the island.

The restored park has informal paths, seating and a small playground. Outdoor concerts, festivals and other programmed events sometimes use the southern area, so a quiet island walk can be interrupted by event infrastructure.

Getting there and access

On foot: Enter from Legion Bridge, roughly midway between the National Theatre side of the river and Újezd on the Malá Strana side. Take the stairs down from the bridge.

Step-free route: A lift connects bridge level with the island.

Public transport: Use the stops by Národní divadlo or Újezd, then walk to Legion Bridge.

Important: The northern park is public, but do not assume the whole island is freely accessible. Parts of the southern sports area are operated separately. The island also lies in a flood-prone river channel and can close during high water or related works.
