Villingili (Vilimalé)

Villingili, also known administratively as Vilimalé, is a compact inhabited island immediately west of Malé in the Maldives. It is part of the capital’s urban area, reached by frequent public ferry rather than a resort transfer.

Orientation

Villingili—commonly rendered as Vilimalé—is a small residential island in the Greater Malé area, roughly two kilometres west of Malé island. It measures only 31.7 hectares, so this is a place to explore on foot, not a separate atoll escape.

The appeal is straightforward: leave Malé’s tightly packed central streets for a quieter island neighbourhood with open water at its edges. Treat it as a short urban-island visit or a low-key base close to the capital, rather than as a private-resort island.

What the island is like

Villingili is lived-in and compact. Residential lanes, everyday services, small public spaces and the harbour shape the visit more than formal sights. Walk without an itinerary: the island is small enough that its shoreline, local streets and ferry area quickly establish the layout.

Make time for the waterfront. Across the channel, Malé’s dense built skyline gives the clearest sense of how close Villingili is to the capital while remaining physically separate from it.

Getting there

The practical arrival point is the public ferry from Malé. The Villimalé service operates daily, with departures running frequently for much of the day; intervals and operating hours vary by day and during religious observances.

  • From Malé: use the designated Villimalé ferry service.
  • Timing: Friday prayer periods and special schedules can interrupt the usual pattern.
  • At the terminal: allow a little margin if you are connecting onward, particularly around peak commuter periods.

Do not confuse this Villingili with islands of the same or similar name elsewhere in the Maldives. This is the Villingili within Malé’s urban area.

Getting around

Walk. The island’s scale makes vehicles unnecessary for a visit, and walking is the most useful way to understand its residential character. Start at the ferry arrival area, follow the waterfront in one direction, then cut back through the interior streets.

There is no airport on Villingili. For international arrivals, travel first into Greater Malé via Velana International Airport, then continue through Malé to the island ferry.

Useful expectations

Villingili works best when your priority is proximity to Malé with a less compressed island setting. Bring what you need for the day before leaving Malé if you have a fixed schedule, but use local shops and cafés as you would in a residential district. The ferry is part of the experience and the key piece of logistics: plan the return crossing before settling into the walk.
