Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé is the planned, reclaimed island city beside Velana International Airport and Malé in the Maldives. It pairs a long urban beach and broad streets with the everyday services of a fast-growing Greater Malé district.

Orientation

Hulhumalé is a purpose-built island city in the Hulhulé lagoon, created to add housing, services and employment space to the crowded Malé region. It is part of Malé City, but it feels markedly different from the historic capital: the streets are wider, blocks are more regular and the coastline is built into daily life.

This is a working urban district rather than a resort island. Stay here for easy airport access, a local-city base and a public seafront; choose an outer atoll island for an isolated beach escape.

Understand the layout

Development is arranged in phases. Phase 1 is the more established southern section, with the main public facilities, Central Park, hotels, cafés and the best-known beach frontage. Phase 2 extends northward with newer housing and continuing development.

The grid makes independent navigation simple. The eastern shore is the principal beach side; the western side faces the airport, bridge-causeway links and Malé-facing waters. Central Park provides the main green break from the built-up streets.

What to do

  • Walk the east-coast seafront. The long sandy shore, palms and pedestrian route show the island’s urban-beach character better than any single monument.
  • Use Central Park as a landmark. It is a practical place to pause between the beach, cafés and surrounding streets, rather than a destination requiring a full day.
  • Eat locally and internationally. Hulhumalé has a broad mix of Maldivian food, Asian cooking and casual international restaurants. Try mas huni—tuna mixed with coconut and chilli—with roshi flatbread for a local breakfast or snack.
  • Read the city itself. The reclaimed land, planned roads and apartment districts are the point: Hulhumalé is a direct answer to the lack of space in Greater Malé.

Arriving and moving around

Hulhumalé is linked by road to Hulhulé, the airport island, and onward to Malé across the Sinamalé Bridge. That makes it a practical overnight base for early flights or a straightforward addition to time in the capital. Buses and taxis operate on the road network; on foot, Phase 1 is manageable, while rides are useful between the phases or with luggage.

Public boat connections remain important around Greater Malé, but road transport is the direct option between Hulhumalé, the airport and Malé.

Local rules and timing

Hulhumalé is a local Maldivian city. Dress modestly away from beach areas and around mosques, and expect a quieter rhythm around Friday prayers. Alcohol is not part of ordinary local-island dining.

For walking and the beach, use the cooler hours early or late in the day. The exposed streets and sand are hottest around midday; brief tropical showers can arrive at any time.
