Burdwan House
Burdwan House is the historic Bangla Academy building on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in Ramna, central Dhaka. Once the East Pakistan chief minister’s residence, it became a defining site in the history of the Bengali Language Movement and Bangla scholarship.
Why it matters
Burdwan House is not just the address of Bangla Academy; it embodies a sharp reversal in Bangladesh’s cultural history. The early-20th-century building served as the official residence of East Pakistan’s chief minister from 1947 to 1954. During the Language Movement, students and activists came here to press for Bengali to be recognised as a state language.
In 1955, the former seat of political authority became Bangla Academy, founded to research, develop and publish in Bangla. That change gives the building its force: a place associated with the language struggle now houses the country’s principal institution for Bangla language and literature.
Read the building
The white, three-storey structure combines Mughal and European architectural vocabulary. Look for the symmetrical frontage, arched elements and formal proportions rather than expecting a grand palace complex. It is a working institutional building, with the historic house forming the Academy’s main building.
The house was enlarged in 1962 while retaining its original character. The Academy compound also includes a pond and later institutional buildings, so keep your attention on the older white house rather than mistaking the wider campus for the hotspot itself.
Language Movement connection
Burdwan House was a key address in the politics that led to the 1952 Language Movement. In 1948, representatives of the movement met Chief Minister Khawaja Nazimuddin here; an eight-point agreement was signed at the house that March. The building’s later conversion into a Bangla research centre was a direct political demand after the movement.
Inside, the Academy’s Language Movement Museum preserves this connection. The house is best understood alongside the nearby language and independence landmarks around the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan.
Visiting practicalities
Find Burdwan House on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue in Ramna, at the Bangla Academy entrance. It is a straightforward stop by rickshaw or taxi from Shahbagh and central Dhaka.
Access: This is an active academy headquarters as well as a museum. Do not assume every historic room is open for casual entry; view the exterior and grounds respectfully and follow on-site directions for museum access.
Best timing: February is the Academy’s major cultural season, when it organises the month-long Ekushey Book Fair. Visit outside peak fair crowds if you want to study the building’s façade and historical setting at a quieter pace.
