Borgo Maggiore

Borgo Maggiore is San Marino’s historic market town on the northern slopes below Monte Titano. Its Piazza Grande, Thursday market and cable-car station make it the practical lower-level counterpart to the historic centre above.

The market town below Titano

Borgo Maggiore is one of San Marino’s nine castelli, spread over the northern side of Monte Titano. Its historic core developed as a trading place at the foot of the rock and was long called Mercatale—a name that explains its enduring role as a market town. The current name came into official use in 1879.

This is not the mountaintop historic centre. It is a working town below it: come for Piazza Grande, local shopping and the direct cable-car connection uphill.

Piazza Grande

Piazza Grande is Borgo Maggiore’s civic centre and the right place to start. The square has hosted agricultural fairs and a weekly market for centuries. Look up at the clock tower, then note the Church of the Suffrage on the square.

The first recorded market here took place in 1243. The livestock fairs are gone; today’s stalls concentrate on everyday goods.

Market days

  • Thursday morning: the main weekly market runs in and around Piazza Grande, generally from 06:00 to 13:00. Arrive early for the fullest choice of stalls.
  • Saturday morning: MerLo is the local agrifood market, focused on produce and food from local suppliers.
  • Third Sunday of the month, March–December: an antiques market occupies Piazza Mercatale and the porticoes.

Market mornings are the best reason to give Borgo time before heading up the mountain. Outside those hours, Piazza Grande remains a useful orientation point rather than a major sightseeing circuit.

Cable car to San Marino City

Borgo Maggiore is the lower terminus of San Marino’s cable car. The station is at Piazzale Campo della Fiera 10, beside paid P11 parking. The ride links Borgo with the historic centre of the City of San Marino in under two minutes, climbing roughly 200 metres.

Cabins normally run every 15 minutes, with continuous service during heavy demand. The system is accessible for disabled passengers and offers broad views over the hills and, on clear days, towards the Adriatic coast.

Important: Dogs must be muzzled and leashed or carried in a pet carrier; large dogs require an additional ticket. Bulky luggage also requires an extra ticket.

Getting the most from Borgo

Park at the lower cable-car station if you are continuing to the historic centre; it avoids driving up the mountain roads. On foot, keep your visit centred on Piazza Grande and the station—the useful sights are close together, though the surrounding streets rise and fall.

Pair a Thursday or Saturday morning here with the cable car afterwards. The lower station deposits you directly into San Marino City’s historic centre, leaving the town’s market square as a practical starting point rather than a detour.
