Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is Liechtenstein’s state museum of modern and contemporary art, on Vaduz’s pedestrianised Städtle. Its dark monolithic building is as much a landmark as the collection inside.

What it is

Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein holds the country’s state art collection and presents international modern and contemporary art. The collection is particularly strong in three-dimensional work: sculpture, installations and objects, with Arte Povera and post-minimal art among its focal points.

Rather than a fixed permanent hang, works from the collection appear in changing presentations alongside temporary exhibitions. That makes the programme more useful than a quick checklist: look at the current exhibition schedule before deciding how long to allow.

The building

Completed in 2000, the museum is a 60-metre-long dark rectangular volume designed by Meinrad Morger, Heinrich Degelo and Christian Kerez. Its exterior is the essential first exhibit: cement coloured with soot and iron oxide, black basalt and embedded river pebbles from the Rhine Valley.

The façade was ground and polished to a softly reflective, slightly undulating finish. Pause outside to see how the surface changes with the light; the material detail is easily missed at walking pace.

Inside, this dark “black box” turns into a deliberately spare white-cube museum. Six galleries are arranged around two opposing staircases: four top-lit rooms upstairs, plus side-lit and artificial-light galleries at ground level.

How to visit

The entrance is on the pedestrian-zone side at Städtle 32, between Städtle and Äulestrasse. The museum is in central Vaduz; Vaduz Post is the useful bus stop for arrivals from the rail stations at Sargans, Buchs/SG or Feldkirch.

A single ticket covers both Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein and the connected Hilti Art Foundation next door. The latter adds a separate private collection spanning classical modernism and contemporary art. Start in the Kunstmuseum, then take the internal connection to see both without retracing your route.

Nearby bicycle racks and short- and long-stay parking make this a straightforward stop in the centre.

Hours, admission and access

The museum opens Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–17:00, with Thursday hours until 20:00; it is closed Monday. Last entry is 15 minutes before closing.

  • Standard admission: CHF 15; reduced: CHF 10.
  • Under 17s: free.
  • Wednesday: free admission for all visitors.

The building is accessible, with lifts, wheelchair-accessible toilets and wheelchairs or folding chairs available at the ticket desk. Large bags, umbrellas and bulky items go in free lockers. Private photography without flash is allowed unless an exhibition sets different rules; tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted. Food and drink are not allowed in the galleries.
